7th Baduk Botschafter (ambassador) Cup in Berlin

The Baduk Botschafter Cup was held in Berlin from the 30th of April to the 1st of May.

As this tournament takes place in the Korean Cultural Center it is not only seen as a baduk tournament but also as a cultural event displaying the strong bonds between Korea and Germany.

Thus the participants could enjoy a great geom-mu performance during the opening of the tournament as well as korean food served between the rounds. Furthermore Young sun Yoon 8p attended the tournament to provide excellent lectures to the top group as well as commenting on the first board games which were broadcasted on kgs.

This already shows that despite the nice framework program baduk was still the main reason for everybody to be there. This was especially evident with regards to the top players, since they were fighting for the right to represent Germany in the Korean Prime Minister Cup 2011, connected with a flight to Korea. This great prize might explain why even though there were only 38 participants, the level of the top group was still reasonably high.

At any rate it must be noted, that the event did mainly attract people from Berlin and Potsdam, the exception being Benjamin Teuber 6dan and Stefan Kaitschick 5dan from Hamburg. It also explains the mode in which the tournament was played. Short time limits (30min + 3x30sec) were used in order to determine the representative who would do best under the conditions which are to be expected at the Korean Prime Minister Cup.

Scoring four wins in four rounds, Benjamin Teuber 6dan defeated three of the four players who eventually ended up sharing the second place and captured a convincing victory. Benjamin proved that he is in top shape recently, also beating Alexandre Dinerchtein 3p in the European Team Championship. Therefore even though many of the German top players were not present at the tournament, Germany still sends out a worthy representative to Korea. I am convinced that he will do well.
